Now that my initial culture shock has settled down, I can reflect clearly on the huge number of small differences between the states and Vienna. Small things like having to pay to enter the restroom, or to use a grocery cart, or not having to pass a gate to get into the subway broke my everyday understanding of how a city should work. On top of that, the city itself lacked a homogeneous sense of design with architecture and street layouts being varied with age and style. Behind everything there appears to be history both old and recent and I'm not sure how anyone keeps up with it. If I had to describe it all in one word: overwhelming.
Despite that, I'm having a pretty good time. Being able to drink legally is nice and probably adds to it, but exploring the city fills me with a child-like sense of wonder like I'm looking around in an attic for neat stuff. Even doing a little exploring in a day is tiring, so I guess it's a good thing I have a month of it.
This thing is awesome.(WWII Flak Tower)
